So. Yahweh and psychology.

Nothing complicated or controversial about that.

Inviting Yahweh Back Into Psychology

As the title suggests, when it comes to psychology, we’re inviting God back into the group chat. (Yes, very Gen-Z, but hey, it’s a good metaphor.)

Modern thinkers likes us usually keep the field of psychology off limits from our Creator. And we've come up with all sorts of excuses for why:

  • We want accuracy, not superstition.

  • We want freedom, not restriction.

  • We want exploration, not anxious tiptoeing and red tape.

And then there's the lingering question, Is he even real? (We'll circle back to that.)

But here's what I've noticed: When it comes to letting Yahweh inform our understanding of the human mind, people tighten up outside the church just as much as they do inside of it—only for slightly different reasons.

It's as if we believe God's presence will pollute psychology.

For people outside the church,

It's as if we believe God's presence will pollute psychology.

And for the people inside the church,

It's as if we believe psychology will compromise his holiness.

And that's got us stuck, to say the least.

A Note on Yahweh and the Sciences

There is a larger conversation to be had about Yahweh and the sciences, but we're going to focus on psychology for the sake of keeping this a blog post, and not a book.

Here's something that's been on my mind:

It’s remarkable that we use creation to dismiss the Creator.

It'd be like if Michelangelo's David said to the visitors swirling around his feet, "Oh, Michel? He does not exist. Thought that was obvious. Stop asking."

If we were talking about Billie Eilish, Picasso, or even Apple, and we used what they've created as "proof" they were not real...you see the absurdity?

This is where we get closer to the real problem:

It's much easier to say God does not exist than it is to admit he does, but we do not want him.

The first one leaves us wrestling in our heads.

The second leaves us wrestling with our hearts.

And if we're honest, we know which one is harder.

So let's talk about Yahweh "messing up" psychology (and vice versa.)

Fear #1: "Yahweh Pollutes Science"

Common objections for blocking Yahweh from the psychology group chat:

  • The Bible will be misused as a science handbook.

  • The church will limit, block, or persecute inquiry.

  • Bringing God into it is too abstract; we should deal in facts.

  • Censorship is coming.

  • Inferior methods will be justified as “biblical.”

  • Reality will be denied in the name of faith.

Beneath all of these lies one fear: the truth will be denied or obscured.

But if God really is who He says He is—the God who calls Himself the Truth—why would He deal in lies? And if He did, His claim as Truth would collapse anyway.

God cannot be contaminated by his creation.

Fear #2: "Psychology Compromises God's Holiness"

Let’s clear this up:

  • God cannot be contaminated by his creation. (Matthew 15:11; Mark 7:15, plus the countless verses that explore Jesus' sinlessness while living on earth, which was full of sin.)

  • Creation testifies to God’s existence. (Psalm 19:1)

  • Studying an element of God’s creation (our souls) fulfills, not violates, His call for us to steward the earth.

Psychology itself does not compromise God’s holiness. The danger arises when we reshape God to fit our psychological theories.

When psychology bends the knee to the Creator, we gain clarity.

When we ask Yahweh to bow to psychology, we get chaos.

This isn’t about mixing two things so much as deciding who is LORD.

Unblocking Yahweh

If you're still with us, kuddos. We really went for it in this blog post.

I want to leave you with one last piece of encouragement.

If this feels messy, remember, Yahweh is not intimidated by what intimidates us. We may have temporarily "blocked" him from having a say, but he's not gone. We can always let him back in.

There is no greater therapist than the Maker of our minds.

No one more insightful.

No one more compassionate.

No one more eager to heal.

No one more equipped to diagnose what’s going on.

Yahweh is as good as it gets.

So if you've blocked him, let him back in.
